Yes, it is true. Every Wednesday for the past 2 years, T and I would go to the same Arby’s, order the same thing, and sit at the same table. But, eventually, even we had to say goodbye to the big hat…and move on.
A sad day indeed, as we were well known to the staff at this particular Arby’s, and we tended to think of it as "our" restaurant. After 100 weeks of Arby’s though, even our love of the place couldn’t help fight off the fact that we were indeed getting sick of it. That, plus the fact that every day for 2 years I ordered a Roast Chicken club, curly fries, and a cherry pie without deviating once…you can see that it is a miracle we lasted as long as we did!
Did anything precipitate this? Possibly. While we were recently on a vacation in Hawaii, we decided to visit the local Arby’s on "Arby’s Day" to see how the Arby’s there compared to our home version. It was located in the garage of a shopping mall, with an open front that led right into the parking structure. We got to enjoy our meal with the smell of carbon monoxide, the piercing sound of a jackhammer as workmen did construction nearby in the garage, and their ketchup dispenser was empty so we were forced to use their cut-rate packets. It was also the only Arby’s we’ve seen that actually had pigeons inside of it. (see below) One could argue this was the beginning of the end for our adventures to Arby’s, as this experience really didn’t sit well with us. It would be one short month from this point that we called it quits.
What does the future hold? Well, we are breaking the tradition of Arby’s, but not of meeting for lunch. We’ve decided to move around the city and find some new dining each week – and see what Denver has to offer us. Could it be better than Arby’s? Only time will tell…
So long Arby’s! I’m sure we’ll be back to visit as casual civilians next time (rather than veteran regulars), possibly even on a Wednesday. We’ve talked about visiting the Arby’s Corporate Center in Arvada sometime…just to round out our Arby’s experience.
UPDATE: June 2005. We have revisited Arby’s perhaps for the last time. We knew they took our Roast Chicken Club off the combo menu some weeks ago, but it turns out they completely removed it from the menu now. You’d think after eating the same thing for years I’d be completely sick of it, but the fact is it was an excellent sandwich, and was the reason I personally kept going back. Without it, I’m lost. Nothing against their roast beef, but I don’t eat roast beef - so I go for chicken usually. After trying their Chicken Bacon and Swiss and being 100% disappointed, I can’t see any reason to return. Actually, the only thing worth getting now is the Cherry Pies! If they take those away it will be disaster indeed!
If you liked Arby’s Roast Chicken Clubs, make sure you send Arby’s a friendly letter asking them to bring it back! You can contact them directly here.
