President’s Day Ride, Feb 21 2005
I thought that with all the dry weather we’d been having, the top of Mt. Falcon Park would start to be rideable again. We popped up there today and tried to ride down to the Old Ute trail. We rode through long sections of snow, with the occasional slippery patches of solid ice. It was in very poor condition, although sections (mostly the south-facing slopes) were OK to ride for short distances.
Bagging this location, we got back in the Jeep and headed over to Matthews-Winters Park, where we knew it was 99% clear. Sure enough, we started at the lot and rode to the creek crossing (some mud)...and then continued on the bottom portion of trail (avoiding the muddy climb). This was mostly clear, with just a little mud at the beginning.
We rode all the way down to Red Rocks trail, which dumps you out at the southern terminus of the Dakota Ridge trail. We opted to ride the road back up the hill to the parking lot, and got a good workout doing so. This makes for a fun loop that is mostly level or downhill on the technical/fun sections of the MW trail, and allows you to rest on the easy uphill up the road. This would make a nice loop to do a time or three at this park.

This website is giving me heartache. Oh, how I wish I had moved to Denver before the real estate madness started.
